CHILI

Chili is the most comforting meal for those cold days. There’s nothing better than curling up on the sofa with a warm bowl of chili on a snowy day. Our hoomans love to make us chili, because it’s very healthy. Us dogs can enjoy all different types of beans, which are filled with vitamins and minerals. Kidney beans and black beans provide a good source of plant based protein for us, so if you want to make this meal vegetarian then just skip the ground meat and your pup will still get lots of protein. Most chili recipes require onions, but because these are toxic to dogs mom skips these. She adds other stuff like carrots and bell pepper to make this chili flavorful. Mom also adds corn to this recipe because corn is very common in dog foods and it is easily digested by dogs, which means dogs can get more nutrients from corn than hoomans do.

Ingredients:

  • 1 pound of ground beef or ground turkey
  • 3 large carrots
  • 1 bell pepper (color doesn’t matter)
  • 1 can of tomato paste
  • 1 cup of low sodium beef or chicken broth
  • 1 can of kidney beans
  • 1 can of black beans
  • 1 can of corn
  • 1 tablespoon of olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon of dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon of dried parsley
  • 1 tablespoon of cheddar cheese

Chop up the carrots and bell pepper until finely diced. In a large soup pot, heat olive oil on medium heat. Add chopped carrots, bell pepper, and ground meat. Break the meat apart with a wooden spoon and stir. Cover and cook until meat is browned, about 6-7 minutes. Next, add tomato paste, oregano, and parsley. Stir until well combined. Add the beans, corn, and beef broth. Mix well and let simmer for 25-30 minutes. Let the chili cool for 10 minutes before serving to your pooch. Sprinkle some cheese on top of your dog’s bowl if you’d like.

If you want to make yourself some too, then do all the steps above. After you have served your pup, then add 2 tablespoons of chili powder, 1 tablespoon of cumin, 1 teaspoon of cayenne pepper, 1 teaspoon of garlic powder, and 1 teaspoon of salt. You can also add a grilled onion and a can of diced tomatoes and chili peppers to your portion. Top your portion with cheese, sour cream, and green onions if you want!
