Hi hoomans! We love to be pet as most dogs do. We’ve noticed that hoomans tend to pet us more when our coat is nice and soft, so to help all the doggos out there we want to give you some tips for keeping your dog’s coat healthy!
- Food
- Food is always a good answer. If your dog’s coat is lacking luster it’s probably a result of what they’re eating and more importantly what they are not eating. When we get everything we need in our diet our coat shows it! If you’re concerned about your dog’s fur contact your vet and see if they are getting everything they need! Follow your vet’s directions and try adding some healthy treats to their diet. Check out our post Dog Approved Human Food to find out what’s good for us! Mom often feeds us apples, pumpkin, berries, and peanut butter, which we thoroughly enjoy!
- Supplements
-
- Sometimes your dog has a great diet but their coat isn’t showing it. This was the case with Porkchop when he was a baby. Porkchop has always had the best appetite in the family. The hoomans claim he’s never turned down a morsel of food. When he was a baby his appetite was no different… the boy ate everything. The hoomans tried giving him healthy foods to make his fur grow but the guy was pretty hairless for an Aussie. Mom decided to look into supplements to help Porky grow hair, which was good for the rest of us too (Mom doesn’t like us to feel left out and always gives us all a snack).
- Porky before and after supplements:
- The hoomans did some research and decided to buy Licks Dog Skin and Allergy + Shiny Coat Gummi Vitamins for Porky. These gummies are truly delicious, but we will warn you the hoomans hated the smell of them! They’re made with Omega 3 Fish Oil, Curcumin, and Inositol. Omega 3 Fish Oil has a ton of health benefits for dogs and you hoomans! It improves skin and coat health, joint health, and energy. It also aids in the cognitive development of puppies and can improve cognitive function in older dogs! Can anyone say bonus? Curcumin also has many benefits to dogs because it is a strong antioxidant, it acts as an anti-allergen agent, has anti-inflammatory effects, and it acts as an anti-microbial agent. Inositol is also important because it helps the body’s energy system. After mom read about all these ingredients she decided to buy these gummies for Porky… and us (like we said Mom is a big fan of keeping things fair).
These worked well and Porky’s coat started to become beautiful again. The hoomans think he looks like a regal little prince now.

- Another supplement the hoomans like for keeping our coats healthy is coconut oil, which we happen to love the taste of. Coconut oil is great because besides improving skin and coat, it also improves digestion, can cause weight loss, and it has antibacterial properties.
- Mom likes to make us frozen snacks with coconut oil! You can basically put anything with coconut oil and freeze it and we will like it. Check out mom’s recipe for frozen berry and coconut treats!

- The last supplement the hoomans recommend is salmon oil! Salmon oil is rich in Omega-3 Fatty Acids (also in the gummies), which is great for promoting a healthy coat, reducing inflammation, and lowering blood pressure.

- Grooming
- Our last tip for keeping your dog’s coat healthy is grooming. Groomers are experts in all things fur so they know what is needed to make a dog’s coat healthy. Sometimes all your dog needs is a haircut so that the soft newer fur can breathe. You should also brush your dog regularly and give them a nice bath, even if they don’t like it. Just think… it’s for the greater good of everyone. They’ll get more pets and attention and you won’t have to plug your nose!
- The hoomans like to use furminators to brush us:
- These are great because the blue button you see above acts as a release button to deposit hair!
- The hoomans also like how this doesn’t damage our coat and is easy to use!
